Support for the development of a national early childhood development programme

Although the early childhood years (0 to 8) are recognised as a critical period for childhood development, few countries have structured programmes. In partnership with UNICEF, the Pôle de Dakar supports states in developing national early childhood development programmes revolving around three tools:

> Sector Financial framework
Framework determines the overall architecture of early childhood development sector over the medium term and stimulates on possible options in light of available financing (age groups, coverage, organisation and quality of services, etc.)

> Survey on Parenting practices
In order to support the design of a parental education program, a survey is conducted to identify their practices in key child development areas (nutrition, hygiene, stimulation, communication, psychomotor and cognitive development, language development, emotional and social development, etc.).

> Child evaluation at entrance of primary school
This evaluation targets a wide range of skills that are expected of children on entry into primary school, with a view to a more successful schooling. It can be used to adjust the preschool curriculum but also that of the first grade of primary, because not all children are expected to benefit from preschool education over the short term.
